Lying Leg Curls
« on: November 07, 2018, 07:11:49 PM »
As the zero readers of my journal know, I jumped on the lying leg curl machine recently only to realize the skinny girls using it before me were doing my working weight

Had the thought, my hams are weak, therefore hindering my squats, so I've hit this more often. Doing them today after squats I was thinking of the motions of a squat and the motion of this machine, picture that for a second......

You begin on this machine with straight legs, with resistance to bending them. With a squat, you begin with straight legs, with assistance to bend them. With a squat, you have resistance to straightening your leg, with this machine, assistance.

Sounds like the machine will do very little to improve my squat strength?

I'm sure they'll grow but I doubt there would be much carryover as you've described. I believe it's a knee dominant exercise vs goodmornings, stiff legged deadlift etc being hip dominant hamstring.

Then again I've heard you can't "target" a portion on a muscle. It either contracts or it doesn't. I'm sure more knowledgeable people will chime in. By the way I suck at lying hamstring curls as well.

I don't think this exercise would do anything to improve your squat strength.

Squat more to squat more.

I used to do the whole stack on any leg extension or leg curl machine for 10+ reps and had a weaker squat at the time.

I'm curious to why you believe that your hams are lacking in relation to squat strength?   Sounds like you're focusing on biceps to improve your bench numbers.

I'm thinking reduni might have a point that a glute & ham combo would influence the motion better. Although personally I'm in the Flex camp of squat moar to squat moar. (Insert story from Westside guru can't-remember-his-name, about someone kidnapping your family and you have 30 days to squat 500#. Whatcha gonna do? Probably a lot of squatting)

Have a point that a glute & ham combo would influence the motion better. ..

That thing certainly hits the glutes as well, that's why the chicks are always on it.

Just thought I picked up on a weak link, with 2 legs I can only do 70 lbs but squat over 300 every week.

Gotcha.  Like Flex, I -can- do the whole stack, but any concentration of pace, like a 2-1-4, will bring some humility to my ego.

And I'm nowhere near 300 anytime lately (or ever).
