USAPL Barbells on the Boardwalk, 5/12/18
« on: February 23, 2018, 06:35:29 PM »
Since i'm not able to make it to Spring Supremacy, i found this meet and signed up. It will be my first USAPL meet. I'll post progress and results in this thread. Meet is in Santa Cruz, CA (my hometown)

Few differences about this comp from my previouse meets:

Squats: Sleeves only. This will reduce my comp squat numbers a bit, compared to my 2 previous meets where i used knee wraps.
Deads: In USAPL there is no deadlift bar, so you pull with a stiff bar in comp. When my training progresses, i think i'll add some heavy deadlift singles with my Ohio Power Bar to prepare for pulling with the Eleiko bar

I've got a pre-meet conference call on 2/26 with RTS coaches to develop a training strategy for the meet. Will post about plan when i learn more

No wraps, no whippy DL bar.  Yikes.

Good luck.

Good luck Andrew!  I've been considering doing a USAPL meet too.  They don't do many in this area though.  I've been DLing with either my B&R or OPB and got used to the no bend pretty easy.  Then again, my DL sucks too, so there's that.  The diameter is actually more comfortable for me in mixed grip, but hook grip is tough.

That's Great, Andrew.  One additional heads up, is that USAPL is considerably stricter with their squat depth.  Make sure you know how deep you need to go.

^^ Yah, this.  Also, I don't recall your bench set up, but if you're a toes on the floor bencher, you'll need to become a feet on the floor bencher.  :)

Best of luck!!!

Thanks everyone. Appreciate the USAPL tips too. I知 not worried about squat depth, I知 good on depth in training and on platform so far. I think the biggest impact is the lack of a deadlift bar, but I知 doing all my training with the Ohio Power Bar to get ready. If I can get 250kg on th stiff bar I値l be pumped. Squat numbers will be down a bit too, with only the use of sleeves. But my training numbers are looking like I should be able to match or possibly exceed my current wrapped PR in sleeves.

Good Luck Andrew!  sounds interesting, but nice it's in your hometown, makes life easier.

For DL's if you don't have a stiff bar, pull deficits.  I trained with a stiff bar pretty much my entire lifting career and most people says it's equivalent to pulling deficits since there's very little give.

4 days out, training block is essentially wrapped up, just one light session tomorrow to keep the movement patterns dialed in. My planned openers are 385/236/518. Meet prep has gone well, my squat feels strong, bench is still a bit painful but I think some gains are there for the taking. Deads are strong except my grip has been an issue due to elbow tendinitis. No question in my mind that I can pull a big deadlift but whether I can hold on to it long enough for a clean lockout is another story. My body weight is higher than its ever been, I知 sitting at about 227lbs, perfect place to be for the 105kg class. I grew out of my belt, struggled yesterday to get it latched into the very last hole..but that痴 ok, I ain稚 putting all this work in to be small..lol
