Front squats for singles
« on: March 24, 2015, 10:45:44 PM »
after so many years doing this I rarely post about training anymore, but I've been wondering - front squats for reps suck for me as my form gets chittier with each rep, and I cant really do any kind of cumulative TUT fatigue going

I don't like doing multiple hard sets either as my upper back tires out first and the last few sets are ugly

So today I did 8 singles - using 315 (roughly my 5RM) paused for my first work single - and pyramided up to 385 then back down and did the last 5 with 315 again

Obviously this isn't for hypertrophy with that TUL but it seemed like a nice way to get some work in (is 8 reps work?) with FS's

followed this with goblets for rep work then one balls out set of leg press to finish.

Cliffs - today I did singles, I will keep doing this and change the loading params I think, single reps seem to suit fronts much better than reps

For the life of me I cannot do front squats.  Not even with 135.  SRS.

My wrists don't like bending that far.

Stick straps onto the bar and hold onto the ends, only way I can do it.
Search front squat with straps on google image search.
FS is a rather humbling lift compared to BS.
You can grind out a rep on BS with pretty terrible form fairly close to 1 rm but no way could you do the same with a FS you will ditch the bar.

^^^straps are a good alternative, I prefer the cross hands method.

I googled this pic and it's from Flex2000's photobucket......Flex is that your photobucket?

We added them in AFTER back squats. To get used to them and fit them into our routine somewhere....  5-6 sets of BS, then 4-5 of FS usually...

Numbers are low(end up doing a few sets of 185 x5) but getting the exercise in, getting used to it.. def worth it in the long run. Shit is really uncomfortable for the first few weeks/months.. getting used to them now.

Try just putting 2 fingers on the bar with the clean grip, it requires much less wrist flexibility

I used to FS almost as much as I back squatted but the ratio isn't anything like as good now.

Wow that's impressive.  I've been doing front squats for a long time and not even close to my back squat numbers.  I think it happened once though in a dream. :o
