There is no substitute for BB rows.   They are a staple.   Your numbers should stay close to your bench.

When I am pushing hard on deads, I will take it easier on them, but when not pushing heavy deads, I go heavy.   Going heavy does not mean you have to use crappy form either.  You can get a little dirtier and do 'yates' type rows, but I prefer the more strict form.

This is an old vid from a year ago
315 rows x 6

Did the wraps really help your elbows? Mine are sore as hell from these.

I was struggling with a lot of forearm tendentious at the time.   The sleeves really seemed to help.   I have not worn them much any more, but yes, keeping that whole area warm with light compression really made a difference for me.

They are "crusher" (single ply) wraps from lifting large.com.   Only like $25

I'm seeing a $28 pair. I wrapped up with a dollar store ACE bandage last night.

I use one of these when my tendonitis flares up. Helps a lot. Has a little pressure point pillow in it.

After all this talk about how BB rows are so vital, I had to give them another shot.  I dropped them when my elbow started bugging me last year.  I've got an Inzer Advance Designs elbow brace now, which I like because you can tighten or loosen it as needed.  I just loosen it on exercises that don't bug my elbow, but leave it on to keep the elbow warm.

I was able to my way up to a set of 6 at 245lb, so the cable row and t-bar row have been working those muscles pretty well I guess.  I went with a double over hand grip and kept my elbows in tight, and they didn't hurt at all.

I'm adding BB rows back in to my rotation as long as my elbow isn't hurting.

There are stretches that should not be neglected if you are experiencing tennis elbow type issues.

There are also little exercises which help A LOT.   You can look them up on youtube....but there is also a little thing you put over your fingers to provide resistance so you can practice opening up the fingers under tension.  (an often underworked aspect when you are gripping things so much)

I have one and use is every once in a while. I bought the 'heavy' one and it works great

I had never done them before but feel like sometimes the moves you are neglecting, are the ones that can help you the most.

Those Inzers are the same that Jim sent me.The adjustability on them is bloody great.I reckon those things have kept me lifting and I use one on my elbow, and have another pair for my knees but without I would be in serious "discomfort".

I won't be reaching weight to utilize proper wraps, but those Inzer sleeves are fucken excellent.

On 5x5, what can I substitute for barbell rows? The form is really bugging me and I frankly hate them.
Seated cable row?

One of my sons hated BB rows, he could not get the form down, he absolutely hated them.

But no way in hell was I going to allow him to pick an "easier" movement just because he did not like them. He had trouble doing them with 95lbs. He is now doing BOR with 185lbs and his back is getting really thick.

His form is also tight now, he sucked at it in the beginning but with consistency it is down pat.

Exactly what I experienced.  Then started SL 5x5 with an empty bar on everything except deads.  No shame in learning the technique first and adding weights later.

Question:
Why should I do barbell rows instead of dumbbell rows?

That's an easy one.

Do both, that's what I did a few hours ago.

A thumbnail sized picture is worth 100 words

I hate BB rows - ever since my lower back and hip went they just aren't worth the trouble. Tripod stance DB rows takes off the pressure on my lower back and I can do roughly 2 x as many reps with them as I could with a BB holding the same weight

If I had no issues I'd do them, but never with ego weights!

BB rows = thickness
DB rows are for width
