I REALLY don't like barbell rows
« on: October 18, 2014, 03:10:54 AM »
On 5x5, what can I substitute for barbell rows? The form is really bugging me and I frankly hate them.
Seated cable row?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates BB Rows. Because of my short arms the ROM is a joke. How about T-Bar Rows?

I don't suggest substitution.  Do them.   :P

I'm not a fan of them either but unless you have a legit medical excuse you might want to challenge yourself a little further.

I used to loathe bicep work.
Then I competed and was told my arms were too small.
I trained biceps even more.
My biceps got bigger.
I still did not like training biceps nor doing curls but I did like bigger arms.
I also love bb'ing and it was simply something that had to be done on my part.

So now I train biceps 2x/week and don't hate it because I like the results.

ya dig?

I cannot medically do bb rows anymore, there are many good machine replacements and I go with whatever machine I can use the most weight on, the seated cable row is not one of them (stack @ my gym is only good for 250 lbs.).
The Hammer Strength Row is good for 450 lbs..
If you do chose equipment over free weights, chose equipment that has some growing room.

You can try cleans and pullups.  But cleans are difficult.

BB rows are great, they help save your shoulders from bench.
If you don't want to have shoulder issues when you get older it is a good idea to train pull as much as you train push.

Dang, I just saw this thread and found out that I really should be doing BB rows.  I already knew that, but have managed to block it from my mind thus far.

BB rows and DB rows both aggravate an old knot in my left rhomboid area, which causes something that feels like a pinched nerve, which I lived with for years.  When I got laid off from my old stressful job 2 years ago the knot and the pain suddenly melted away, but any sort of bent over row tries to bring it back.  I do seated rows, pull ups, face pulls, Hammer Strength high pulls, reverse flys, and of courses deadlifts with no upper back aggravation.  Dammit.
PRs:
OHP 140 - 8/27/15
BP 245 - 4/7/17
DL 345 - 8/26/15
Squat - ugh
Leg Press 670x2 - 12/10/15

I just started doing them along with DB rows and while they did not bother me, they did not seem to give me much bang for my buck. I'll have to shoot a video, I must be doing something wrong

There is no substitute for BB rows.   They are a staple.   Your numbers should stay close to your bench.

When I am pushing hard on deads, I will take it easier on them, but when not pushing heavy deads, I go heavy.   Going heavy does not mean you have to use crappy form either.  You can get a little dirtier and do 'yates' type rows, but I prefer the more strict form.

Thanks for the video, seeing how you get into form is very helpful

Dunno what your form is like Cali, but you could try widening your stance and/or bending knees a bit.Even sticking with a weight you can handle for a while before increasing.

Well chest supported rows on a high bench are an option with a bad back, I hope to never have a bad back, a dodgy shoulder is bad enough!
