"New Whey" liquid protein
« on: August 13, 2014, 06:18:01 PM »
Anybody used or heard of New Whey?  I found it at Walmart.  42 grams of liquid protein in a 3.8 oz. tube, 180 calories.  If protein is 4 calories per gram, 42x4=168, which means there's only 12 calories of filler material in there if the label is factually correct.  Their website claims it's more "bioavailable" than other forms of whey protein.

In a 6-pack from Walmart it comes out to about $2.40 per bottle, so it's not the most cost-effective form of protein, but I think it will be good to use when I'm traveling for work.  (I travel by car.  I don't think you could take it on a carry-on at 3.8 oz.)

Sorry, don't mean for this to be a pitch for this product, but here's their website:  www.newwhey.com.

Oh yeah, it doesn't taste too bad.  Not too good either.

Never heard of it, but then again I rarely ever go in Wal-Mart.

Might check it out if nothing more than to keep in my credenza at work for the odd hunger pangs.

Toby never tried it. But if you travel by car wouldnt a tub of protein and a stop at a gas station for a small milk be just as easy? Or even a decent protein bar? I haved traveled with snack size bags with one serving in each bag before

If you are travelling just use a cleaned out Gatorade bottle and put one or two scoops of whey powder in it then add cold water or cold milk and shake whenever/wherever then toss the Gatorade bottle when done.

LULZ.

I do that every day.  Gatorade bottle with 2 scoops of whey in my lunch bag and I just add cold water from the water cooler in the lunch room then shake, drink, and toss the bottle in the recycle bin.

Easy peasy.

Looks like first ingredient is 'collagen protein'.

Neat use of 'whey' in the name when it is far down on the list.   AA profile is not all that great....

Some info:

Quote
Hydrolyzed Gelatin Protein vs. High Quality Whey Protein
Unfortunately, not every manufacturer uses high quality protein. Some are perpetrating the 'big ripoff' to unknowing customers who are purchasing supposed protein / amino drinks that actually contain hydrolyzed gelatin protein (other names include hydrolyzed collagen protein, animal connective tissue protein, other animal proteins, etc.) Hydrolyzed gelatin is made mostly from frozen and fresh pork skins as well as cattle bones and hides. These inedible connective tissues and bones are then run through a series of caustic baths, intermittently with hot and cold soakings to separate out the collagen. This is what you are putting into your body when you drink a protein drink which has hydrolyzed gelatin on the label.

Hydrolyzed is the basis for gelatin dessert, and although it might be a fun food, it was not designed to build muscle mass and it won't. This protein has a PER of almost 0. It contains little or no tryptophane, one of the essential Amino Acids necessary for the formation and utilization of all the other Amino Acids. It is a lot cheaper for a manufacturer to purchase hydrolyzed gelatin than the special whey American Body Building uses, which is a natural milk protein naturally extracted during the processing of cheese, after which the lactose, a milk sugar, is removed.

When using hydrolyzed gelatin, the nutritional information panel on the label is supposed to make the statement "Not a significant source of Protein" next to the word protein. But they usually and conveniently forger to include it. Have you been using a product like this and not gained the mass you thought you should on a high protein supplement? Well, you're not getting any protein for it. Whenever you see hydrolyzed gelatin anywhere on the label, even if the label says the product contains whey, check your rear view mirror. Gelatin can cost 75% less than soluble whey, and whey is much more difficult to process. Given these facts, how much quality protein do you believe they are actually giving you in their products when gelatin is listed on the label.

This is what I do when I travel, except with water bottles.  I also pick up little bottles of milk at convenience stores, or a quart if I have a fridge in my hotel room.

The low calorie aspect was what caught my attention when looking at this stuff in the store, and that's because I'm starting a mini-cut this week.  Just found out I'm going on a work incentive trip to the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas at the end of September, and thought I'd try to cut up a bit before then.

That information about collagen protein will make me think twice about this stuff.  The ingredients list says a "proprietary blend of collagen protein isolate, whey protein isolate, casein protein isolate".  It doesn't say hydrolyzed, and I don't know what that means.  Perhaps all collagen protein = hydrolyzed gelatin protein ... ?

Doesn't seem to be a good option for me.  When I travel I'll do something similar to what Flex does with pre-loaded powdered bottles.
