Title: Thinking of going back to bodybuilding....
Post by: FLEX on February 02, 2020, 08:05:46 PM
Feeling like shit walking around at 285 lbs at 52 years of age and chasing numbers.

Everything hurts.

Plus I don't wanna have a heart attack.

Just went to a new gym today and holy hell it has everything.

Seriously thinking of going back to a more traditional bodybuilding routine and dropping 50 lbs.

:wtf:

My joints actually feel better just doing the big 3 for low reps.

I've always been on the edge but when I trade evening beers for evening cardio it's literally only 4 weeks until a huge change.

The mental switch is the hardest, you can't just "cut back" or "add cardio."

Cutting back on calories and beer starting tomorrow. Actually started cutting back on the beer last week.

I'll see how the training goes.

Really the thought of doing a strictly bodybuilding routine does not appeal to me.  It's fucking boring.

But walking around at 275+ at my age doesn't feel sustainable either....

A "strictly bodybuilding routine" is terrible for health and joints. I've known you for like 10 years and your training has only changed once in that time. I would shop around for a program, it's gonna be irritable, uncomfortable and annoying for awhile but those changes are good for heart health and living long enough to buy clothes for Grandchildren.

You know Jim that doesn't sound like a bad idea, I'd like our summer get together's to have some longevity to them. 275+ is a lot for the heart to deal with especially as we age regardless if it's muscle of fat.

I have to agree with Bando, wise words of wisdom I'd say.

If you are in need of some programs to check out let me know, I have a ton!!

So true. The mental is the hardest thing for me. I have gotten so lax on training and diet for about the past year. I keep trying to get back in the gym on a regular basis and eat better but it's become such a (bad) habit I'm having a harder time that usual breaking.  :(

Good luck Jim. Hope you can find a good program to stick with.

Wanted to respond to this.   Things a little nuts on the home front, but wanted to say that whatever you choose, I will help out and or share experiences in whatever way I can.

We have had surprisingly similar paths to and then from and then back to the gym.   Much much respect to all your hard work over the years.

I wont add my own bias but I can share experiences.  It has not always been the easiest decision, but I have no regrets now 4+ years after switching directions.

I am here for just about anything if you want to bounce ideas off.

Welp,

Getting serious about cutting some fat.

Yesterday's food/calories:

Breakfast: protein shake made with 50/50 2% milk and water & 1.5 scoops whey isolate

Lunch:  6 scrambled eggs with some fresh-made salsa for flavour

Dinner: Potatoes and roast beef

Beers:  NONE

Going to do this for a while and see how things go....

Trading beer time for cardio time yields results that are rare for a natty. About 4 weeks to abs for me.

So when does this start? I see you're still doing the big 3 for low reps which isn't an ideal bodybuilding  workout.

Dude I am old and change takes time.

I had zero beers this week until tonight but only because we took tomorrow off work.

I did shoulders today and used MACHINES.

You may STFU now.  :D

Just saw this thread Jim. Think thatís a great decision, mainly the body weight. I know Iím a skinny fuk, but I have thought about this long and hard the last little bit and decided if I canít see my abs, Iím too fat lol. Itís all about my future health.
As for the training, I dunno, do what you enjoy. I legit like doing the bodybuilding higher rep stuff a lot more than I thought I would.
You know as well as me, diet will control what your body comp will look like. If you love to powerlift, powerlift!

Thanks Shawn.

We're really enjoying our new gym and we're both re-committed to getting leaner and not worrying as much about strength.

But......IMA still try to be strong.  :D

It really is a well run gym chain. Always staff around vacuuming, cleaning, clean change rooms and great variety of equipment. Our Movati has a nice pool as well that I have brought the boys too quite a few times.
I am the same, always have that wanna be strong mentally. Hit the heavy compound first to get your strength fix, than blast the isolations for dat pump!

So when does the bodybuilding training start? If you just do heavy low rep compounds you're just gonna be a smaller weaker version of yourself. Gotta hit them 8-12 rep sets, train biceps, calves etc...

ION you're changes are rubbing off on me, left beer in the fridge and hit the sack early last night. Best I've felt on a Saturday morning in awhile.

I had like 8 or 9 beers last night and was in bed by 11.

8 or 9 beers used to be a typical weeknight.  LOL.

Mon-Thu I had zero beers.

That said, happy Saturday night :beerchug:

This Province/Country is fucked.

Minimum wage is $14/hr and a case of beer is $50 for the absolute cheapest shit you can get.

That just ain't right.

After taxes anyone working for min wage needs to spend almost an entire day's pay to buy a fukken case of beer?

I've never seen beer cheaper than where I live, but could just be as a local I know where to buy it.

If I lived in CA I would probably switch to that legal weed and just have 2-3 beers for drymouth. SRS

I was a HS athlete so it was a no no, had to sign a contract saying we would not use drugs or alcohol during the sports seasons. I was OK with that as after practice dinner and bed was about all I needed. College was another matter, everyone was doing it or selling it. No one back in the 80's ever expected legalized recreational pot, but then we never expected the interwebz either.

Update;  down 15 lbs to 280.  Lightest I've been in years.

Overall has not been that difficult really.  I have never had a problem with food; the beer was always the killer for me.

Also today on bench I did sets of 5 instead of a gazillion singles and did some high-rep seated cable rows after.

SO.  BORING.

Congrats on the progress!    I think you will be surprised how many cals were coming in from liquid refreshments.   When I started tracking cals, seeing on paper where everything was coming from, it was a no-brainer to cut out sodas and beer.     I love beer, and wine....but now when I drink it, I try to enjoy it rather than just consume it as a liquid.   If I am havng a beer with dinner, I will have a glass of water also.   My gulps to wash food down come from water.   The enjoyment of a good beer is something I pay more attention to.

There is always a balance.....  It has now become my 'norm'.   In the end, just find the place you want to be and your lifestyle will adapt.  As wacky as I probably seem to a lot of people, I am just a product of what my goals are.   I never would have pictured myself adopting the way I live now as a voluntary endeavor.   It just kind of came about to accomplish the goals I wanted.   In that way, it was pretty easy....

Good luck man!

It'll be harder in the summer to have zero beers during the week while sitting on the patio but right now it's a lot easier than I expected to just stop drinking beer on weeknights.

Yep....It is why I started drinking so much more coffee.   I turn to it now as nice drink break.

In summer, I sip on grape amino energy ;)    I think we just get in the habit of having something cold or hot to sip on that is part of the ritual.

When it comes to wanting to relax, truth is I would probably smoke a little weed, but I cant control my eating at ALL doing that.  I do like the relaxing feeling though....

It will all find a balance.   In summer, when I want to tie one on, I usually drink vodka and diet lemon lime soda with a lime in it.   Segrams makes a grape flavored vodka and that is my summer time go-to.

Yep...taste like burnt hair.  Grape is the best flavor to disguise it.   Order some optimum concord grape amino energy.  I only use 1 scoop just for the flavor and add BCAA's (or just leucine to that)

I take BCAA every night before bed along w/ whey.   Shown to make effective dose of why almost equiv to twice the dose of whey alone....

I remember you giving me shit when I dried out a year or two back for drinking this:

Now that the shoe is on the other foot, give it a try. Tall pilsner glass with seltzer and a little lemon or lime feels just like a beer going down, no calories and I actually love the taste.

Look at you with your Misc call out thread and all!  :D

WTF is that dude all about?

Anyway....man, srs comment.  You carry your size well.    Really.   I know a lot of 'bigger' dudes and they are not nearly as balanced out.   They seem to have much bigger 'guts'.   Not sure why that might be, but you look good dude.

Wherever you decide to go, I am sure you will do well.   Be careful....getting skinny can be kind of addictive!   It is almost like the reverse of getting big.  (srs)

There is a point in the middle that is hard mentally.  Where you start to lose a lot of bulk and you really feel like you are shrinking.  (and in some ways you are).    But once you get past that, every bit of leaning just makes you look better.
