Title: 2017 comeback tour
Post by: halfway on August 24, 2017, 02:04:23 PM
The last 16 months have been a complete shitshow for me, last march I tore my left bicep,  then 6 months later went in for what I was told was a simple 2 suture labrum repair on my left shoulder  that ended up needing to be repaired a 2nd time just over 5 months ago after an old fuck in a minivan wrecked my car.

Needless to say my left arm is almost non existent now and I'm super paranoid about reinjuring the shoulder. In retrospect I probably would have just left the labrum alone.

Anyway, I moved to Plano, Texas and just started training properly again, metroflex has a gym near me that's pretty well equipped and has chalk, huge juicers and powerlifters so it feels like a good place to rebuild.

SSB squats (cant hold the bar anymore)

315 x 5 - first time using this in years, hard
365 x 3 - pretty brutal. This lift will take some getting used to

Trap bar deads (cant go pronated without pain)

Up to 455x6 - my shoulder cracked on 6 , AC joint adjustment, but that spooked me so I stopped immediately

Even though I shouls be fully healed I need to take things very slowly for now but it felt good to backsquat and pull again

Im training at off hours when the gym is empty so I don't have to be around people lol

Today, DB one arm rows

Right arm topset 130x20, reset each rep on the floor

My right bicep tendon has had a minor tear for a long time and it constantly aches despite being under 10% tear. Rows especially seem to aggravate it

Left arm topset 60lb x 20 yasssss

Football bar pulldowns lots of grips high reps, 130lb max
Hammer rows high reps just one plate
Db hammer curls 30lb x 20 and thick handle cable curls

I really like this gym, its a shame I can no longer lift heavy because their gym records on the wall would ALL be mine just 2 years ago lol

The owners brother was asking me about buying cheap equipment to add to his collection,  so i showed him an amazing online gov auction site where you can get leg presses for $10 and power racks for $50

he said "thats cool" with utter disinterest and refused to look at the site. Kind of weird

Agreed, fuck people

SSB 385x3 then 335x7

Would like to get to repping 405 with this but its such an ass kicker and I have serious limits currently

Did some pause sets with 245

leg press, other fluffy stuff.

Back is utterly fucked again after trying to do yard work to get my house ready to sell, really not cool.

I figure I'm going to run a "cycle" of 300 tren alongside my hrt 200mg of test for a few months once I'm done with the pain, starting to feel really small these days :(

Making it at 200mg/ml with eo which would be crippling by itself but cut with 75% additional volume of prescription test it shouldn't hurt at all. I hope.

Pressed 60lb dbs for 15 reps.

I'm now almost as strong as I was in my first year of lifting, lol.

Hopefully I'll get 20 next time but 60s felt depressingly heavy.

Oh lord.

Is that your only injury?

It's not really limiting in the grand scheme of things, I rowed a 140 for 20 reps the other day with that arm but the niggles and pain always worry me because I don't want to have another freakin bicep repair

the real issue is that even 7 months after my 2nd shoulder surgery its still not back to 100%, having two operations on my left shoulder in the last year really messed up my training lol

Flex :(

Shoulders been feeling shitty but what can you do.

SSB 335 x 7 paused - pausing these is a bitch.

Shrug bar dead 405 x 15 - meh

Nothing else really worth posting.

Zactly how I feel these days.

Still stronger than most of the fuckwits at my gym but that is not much consolation.

Feeling broken lately.

Lol Flex, it could be worse, you could be doing a 13 week intensive routine of brisk walks.

DB benched the 65s for 20 yesterday

pause ssb 385 x 3 tonight

I'd just finished my squat set and was looking at the video to see how long my pauses were when the gym owner came stomping up and started telling me I couldn't use my phone to go on social media  in the gym (?)

I pointed to the sign that says "filming your sets is encouraged" and he got shitty and told me to go look at it outside. I told him it was raining and if they have a sign that says filming is "encouraged" wtf is the problem. He stomped off leaving me annoyed.

5 mins later I'm about to deadlift on the platform when he stomps up and tells me in a shitty tone to put a mat down. I look confused because a retarded fat kid next to me was literally just throwing a lifting log down on the other platform. At which point I'm done so I stop my workout, cancel my membership, leave the gym, give them a bad yelp review.

I've never trained in a place that had such arbitary rules that it might as well be planet fitness but it really pissed me off.

Went to 24 hour to finish my workout.

Fronts 315 x6 - using the SSB has ruined my groove on these, because it allows some junky form. Back to work on these

Db bench 85s x 13

Heaviest in a year, my right side could have done 20 reps but my left is crazy weak and I stopped the second it became a grind

I guess I should aim for 20 with the 75s next time and not try to push up to 90s lol. Shoulder feels meh but at this point theres nothing really to do beyond sacking up and rebuilding my strength.
Title: Re: 2017 comeback tour

DB bench 90s x 15

Inching closer to the 100s and actual weight status. Shoulder didn't feel bad after this amazingly enough.

DB bench 90s x 15

Inching closer to the 100s and actual weight status. Shoulder didn't feel bad after this amazingly enough.

That's because DB's are incredibly forgiving for shoulders. 11 years of heavy lifting, 85% of my benching has been DB's and my shoulders are fine at 50 years old.
Title: Re: 2017 comeback tour
Post by: halfway on October 30, 2017, 12:40:48 AM
It's probably not as impressive as 90 x 15 but yesterday was a major milestone, 100's for 10 - heaviest I've lifted since my first shoulder surgery over a year ago.

Followed by 80's for 20 and some pause stuff.

I managed to tweak my right pec a little, hopefully just a muscle thing and it'll pass but still annoying.

Tonight, Shrug bar deads 495 x 6, dead stop but high handles. Had to use hex plates which sucked all kinds of ass. Once upon a time I was doing this weight for 20 reps :(

Still on 200mg a week TRT for now, may or may not add more but since my strength is slowly returning I'll likely stick at this.

Measured my arms which was horrifying, right is just under 18 and left is just under 17 (figured it would be smaller after a year of disuse), all those years of killing myself in the gym seem to have been wasted lol

Pretty sure my 2nd labrum repair has failed.

If not failed, the most recent MRI shows the area at the back is so degenerated from the surgeries that it might as well be failed - I'm trying not to get down about it, but the constant pain and the loss of a year of my life has me really REALLY wishing I'd told the surgeon to fuck off and not listened to his claims of 100% success rate and no retears.

I lost a year and am now in worse pain than before the first surgery AND now there's some arthritis developing - likely from the surgeries and the cortisone shots to try to calm it down.

Not much I can really do other than learn to live with it, which is something I wish I'd done a year ago!

After 8+ years of coverage, my insurance suddenly refused to pay for my TRT - despite 3 consecutive blood tests showing my natty levels were @150 ish, after being off for 2 weeks - so I'm a little stressed right now. Thanks obamacare.

Sorry to hear the shoulder issues are still there. My surgeon recommended against surgery at this point for my slap tear. I've got a bit of nagging pain that flares up now and again but doesn't sound anywhere as bad as what you've got going on.

Hang in there!

Is that the inside tendon or the outside one?

They didn't repair my tear on the inside one because they said the success rate is very low.
Title: Re: 2017 comeback tour
Post by: halfway on November 20, 2017, 10:43:51 AM
Labrum, not tendon. It has minimal blood supply to heal and after 2 surgeries and a car wreck theres not much tissue left so the MRI image basically looks like pretty much like a tear anyway.

I also found a 1/2 bone spur in my right quad tendon thats been causing me pain for years but the surgeon says removing it means major cuts into the tendon since its grown inside it :( he said no leg work for 9 months if he took that route.

Also I've noticed my VL is slowly tearing away from the knee at the muscle attachment, its been a long term thing and I dont know how long its been an issue. Its about 1/2 inch retracted, my fear is it ends up like old ronnie Coleman's right quad tear.

On the plus side insurance finally paid for my trt, after 3+ weeks off I feel weak as hell, but I did this workout (back to normal schedule this week)

Db press

100 db x 12, 110 x 6 - 110s felt HEAVY lol

Shrug bar dead 405 x 18

Arm pump shit

Theyre only supposed to cover a month at a time so if this is what they consider a months dose it's going to be a good xmas

Shoot, I would not worry about insurance.  Go to goodrx.com.   Ends up costing about $40.   I know 10$ is better but if you are waiting....

I have never gone off since starting.  I have dropped down to 100mg/week for the past 5-6 months.  I actually feel better there I think.   I feel groggy when I go 150-200.  Even a little worse going higher.   Never felt "great" from test, just felt back to "normal".   More is not better for me.(at least on how I feel)

100mg/week is what I've been on since I started. At 4 days out that has me averaging ~675 and that's where my Dr want's me to be at.

Usually 200mg a week for me but since going sub Q he bumped it to 200mg every 5 days since subQ is a lot less efficient

I turn 100mg IM into about @1200 total test which is a pretty good conversion but subQ is maybe half that!

Thanks for the goodrx reference id, and piperdown can you get the plastic probe instead of the old stink finger? The probe isnt fun but it does give a much more accurate number and having a nurse do it is a lot less stressful than a male dr going for gold with his hands lmao

I gather theres a mod at bb.com who's something of an expert in inserting plastic objects into his rectum if you need any more reassurance.

Don't know/didn't ask. My Doc only does the violation once every 3 years since my psa is low and has been stable. Besides Bando's the one that seems to be dreading the exam. After being poked and prodded most of my life most stuff doesn't bother me too much.

Somehow I managed to fuck up my left hip, MRI says its fine bar mild arthritis but the hip doesn't agree with the radiologist on that and hurts like shit all the time

Ortho thinks its my "severely degenerated" l5 disc causing refered pain so he's going to give me a cortisone shot in my lower back this week. Wish me luck lol

Oh,yeah, training, pressed the 110s for 8 last week. Going to try to get to 15 with the 100s for my next mission before heading back to 110s. Overall goal is to get back to 120s for 15, but damn that seems so far away

Why so many reps?

Is 100 the highest your gym has?

It's a mental block, I'm honestly scared of going much over 100 and hearing my shoulder repair pop apart for the 3rd time :/

I had to take a while off lifting for moving house, a 2 day drive from SF to Dallas and then catching up at work on what I missed.

Nothing of note really, but I just pressed 90's x 20 - next stop 95's x 20 then I'll try for the 100s again.

As the proud new owner of a 3 car garage it's time to start building up my home gym again. I had to sell a LOT of it in the move, I'm down to the rack, hammer leg press, hammer iso row and dumbbells up to 110 (we had a hard weight limit on the move)

2017 is over but there's no point making another journal just for these sporadic updates

My left hip is pretty fucked, my new ortho specializes in FAI scope bone shaving and was amazed when he saw my Xrays - he actually asked me 'did you have surgery on this hip?'

It turns out the last surgeon didnt take very much bone out at all, and looking at xrays from before and right after surgery it's really obvious, just I never thought to look at it closely. The new ortho said my hip is 'the worst he's ever seen' - bar one other patient who doesn't lift weights, so not really a valid comparison.

I'm likely going under the knife again sometime this year since I've had 2 cortisone shots and still cant walk without pain.

Suprisingly I can squat just fine, I bought an Edge SSB since my shoulder is still fucked from my car accident, and I really like it.

Workouts have been utter shit due to pain etc BUT I just pause pressed the 120's for 7 reps, the most I've done in 2 long-ass years. I really think I might be able to get back to pause pressing the 120's for 10+ if this continues. My car accident really fucked me up, and everything still hurts, but at least I'm able to press again.

Before going back to pause benching I was cutting about 2" off the ROM at the bottom - now it's as full as I can do, touching my shoulders, and the reps are finally legit again. Feels good

what car crash? Is this new?

12 months back I got rear ended at high speed by an old Chinese man in a minivan, totaled my car, turned my L5 into pulp and tore up my 6 month old shoulder repair.

Had to have my shoulder re-repaired, the irony is I was actually on my way to see my ortho the morning that the old dude decided to run into me.

Man that sucks!

On a joint health note, I know you have struggled.   I have gym buddy SUPER my size guy in his early 50's, who has no shoulder should cartilage left.   They told him to shoulder replacement was his only choice at this point.   He has seen 3 or 4 docs for opinions including the one that does all out pro football guys.  He got to where he could no longer do even light work.

Anyway, I shared with him that I heard cissus helped with joints and joint pain.   Fast forward a month, he started taking cissus and glucosamine and he came up to me the other day and said he cant believe it.   His pain is completely gone and he is actually working shoulders again.  He said he feels so good he almost was tempted to do heavy OHP, but figured it was not the best idea and is sticking with dumbells.

So......I said....wtf, I give all this advice and dont follow it sometimes.   I ordered cissus and glucosamine and started a week again.   I want to see if it will help with my shoulder......

Just throwing it out there.    Good to see you still working it!

Thanks i_d, I'm trying cissus and turmeric and fish oil and hopefully every little bit helps.

Shoulder has been so so but apparently I'm looking at a hip replacement or resurfacing in a decade +/- according to my new ortho.

Comparing my CT scans from 2 years ago at least shows that things haven't changed in the joint since 2015, so he might be wrong, but apparently it's pretty bad in there :(

Managed to pause press the 120s for 8 on a low low incline yesterday, immediately into a drop for 8 more paused reps with the 80s. I'm trying this instead of multiple sets with the 120s

I use the situp bench to incline press on since the wide back feels much more stable as a base, and its low off the floor. But twice now I've had to wait for 30 mins while this same dude works up to decline pressing the 80s loudly grunting on every damn rep and looking around after so everyone knows what a badass he is. Really annoying.

I made a point of warming up with alternate arm pause-pressing the 80s while he strutted around like hes Mark Henry but I doubt he got the point
