I'm going to try for this one, I can fly in and out of Buffalo easily and it's only an hour and half for my dad to drive to so he could watch also.  It's also a few days before I hit the big 4-0

Don't know if everyone is on facebook, but it sounds like the Utica meet is on the chopping block due to difficulty recruiting spotters / loaders / volunteers in general.  And Gene said something along the lines that he was waiting to see if there would be a similar problem in Buffalo.  So if anyone who isn't competing might think about volunteering for even part of the meet, that would be a good thing.  I'd hate to see us lose both New York meets.

Not on facebook.

If I wasn't lifting in the afternoon and also coaching Lisa in the morning session I would have helped in Utica.

Also don't they plan for this stuff?

I dunno....

I really don't know how it all works coordinating spotters / loaders.  Alex???

I feel bad I didn't offer to help in the afternoon.  The two things stopping me were I didn't think my back would tolerate loading 100 lb plates, and I'm not sure how happy 600+ lb squatters and 400+ benchers would be to see me as a spotter.   :o  I probably should have asked if there was anything I could do to help that didn't involve repetitive heavy lifting, but not even sure if there would have been.

I saw that and I felt terrible about not spotting for the 2nd session.

My elbows felt like hamburger, if I had to spot the squats it would have not been safe for the lifters or me. Probably could have done bench but they had help at that point. At the deads I wanted to jump in, but was like a squirrel in the road, should have jumped in though it would have set back my recovery a bit.

I'll help in Buffalo if needed, but not for 14 freaking hours.

When I go to the circus I've never been asked to spot the elephants as they step on the stools and to shovel their shit when they are done. I've never once heard an announcer guilt and chastise the paying audience because they're not prepared.

This type of thing should be set up IN advance with backups on standby if necessary. The announcing about lack of volunteers was bush league, IMO. I like the way they run their meets and appreciate the efforts they put in but it's what they should be doing no? People pay for the privilege of lifting with them and as such they should expect the behind the scenes stuff to be handled prior- unless of emergency. Now I admit I'm not privy to the process they use to find folks to help but its obvious they need to re-think that process since it seems to be an ongoing issue. /rant

Ya I know this isn't the popular thing to say and I'm a dick NASFIG. I can live with that.

It's just an event management thing. I got roped into managing the volunteers for an upcoming golf tournament. Just rely on them for 2 or 3 hours, tell them exactly when to start and stop, what they will be doing, and break up the work.

I've never managed volunteers at a PL meet, but I have a sense that if they broke down the duties into 2 hour segments people would be way more happy to help out.

Yeah, maybe having defined hours would help.  I believe they do pay people to help, but if not enough are interested, they would be stuck trying to wrangle more people at the meet.  They can't run it without spotters and loaders.  I really don't know either though.

Curiosity question, but did people from the hosting gym help out at this meet???  IIRC when they had it at Victory in Rochester, the lifting club from there helped out.  The only thing I heard about the folks from this hosting gym were that RPS could not set up their equipment on time, because the gym insisted on letting their members work out before the meet started.

Wouldn't it  make sense to have that as a prerequisite for bringing a meet to a location like this? I'm not sure what payments the gym receives but I can't imagine it would be difficult to tie some of that compensation on help from the hosting gym. IDK, I'm sure there is way more to it but I still feel like this should be set up prior to lifters stepping on the platform. Chastising the crowd shouldn't even be on the radar. Gene can spin things anyway he wants. When he bans lifters for something as small as sending a record certificate back for correction he loses sympathy points with running his business.

I'd be completely talking out my butt if I tried to guess how their contracts are set up with hosting facilities  :o  Although yeah, that thought certainly makes sense.

Dredging up help on the day of the meet is always going to be a really hard sell.  Very few people are sitting around at meets for no reason at all.  Most people are there because they're either lifting, waiting to lift, just finished lifting (and may be decimated at that point), or are already committed to assisting other people.  Those are all really valid reasons to not want to or be able to help out.  And I'm sure I'm also not the only person who holds back because they aren't sure if they're even appropriate for the job.  Like do I really want to be responsible when some guy fails a huge bench?  Um, not really, no.

So... here's what's been happening.

Yes, Spotters & Loaders should be scheduled ahead of time.  With all my Meets, the loaders are paid and sorted, and they know they'll be getting paid.  So, I usually don't have any issue with it.  Judges are sorted ahead of time, and they know as well, that they'll get paid.

Apparently, 5 people were scheduled to Spot & Load on Saturday.  None of them showed up.  3 judges were scheduled, 1 showed up.
Yes, this is full and well, Gene's issue.  He should have called and confirmed and planned for it.  That's what a Meet Director does.  After the Meet, everyone, except for the Gym owner (and the two guys picking up the chairs), headed out.  I can understand that, as they've paid $100 to compete, it was a long day, and as a customer, they can do that.

As most of you all saw, I jumped in to assist as well.  Its part of what I do for RPS.  Gene does not charge me for sanctioning the Meets I run.  The payback, is that I help assist at the big New England Meets, without compensation. In two weeks, I'll be in NJ, sitting in a Judges chair all weekend, and then assisting with Clean-up.  Gene pays for my Hotel room, and picks up food & Tolls.  He's also compensating me the November Meet. I'll also be there until the venue is packed up and cleaned up.

There's been some talk of "Sponsor" gyms assisting at a Meet, and being recognized as a group assisting the Meet.  Which is honestly how it should be.  The NJ Meets, are sponsored by Jersey Iron.  The Power Challenge up here, was sponsored by TPS (it's now being sponsored by a different gym).  The VT/NH Meets are all sponsored by Fair Haven Fitness.  It's that gyms responsibility to provided Spotters/Loaders.

I don't know the contract between the Crossfit GYm and Gene last weekend, but it's usually $1000-$1500 to rent the space and provide support.  Again, dependent upon the contract they work out.
My Meets, the Venue gets the door fee (and Trev can attest, it's a packed house).  That ranges from $800-$2000 depending on Spectators.

At this past Meet, I was there with Sabrina and the Boys, and the I-S crew.  I felt I should stay and help Gene clean up, but honestly I'd been there since 7am, and my last Dead landed at 9pm or so.  I was exhausted and simply wanted to get home.  As it was, we didn't get to bed until nearly 11pm, because the batteries in our hotel room door died, and the poor girl at the front counter had no clue how to change them out.  We were literally locked out of our room.  She scared up a mechanical key, and was able to get us in, and get the batteries sorted.

In retrospect, if the I-S crew had stayed and all of us had given him a hand, the clean-up would have gone quick and Gene would have been in LaLa Land with I-S.  Each of us had been through a long day, and I knew we were all smoked.

Small Secret here, I have my disagreements with Gene, with multiple reasons why.  I had a boss years back, that told me two things.  Part of my Job, is to make him look good.  His job, is to get the next one.  If I don't do mine, he can't do his.  In this case, with all my Meets, I aim to make the Lifters first, so they enjoy it and want to do bigger RPS Meets.  Same boss, also told me, it's not part of my job to like him.  I don't follow Gene on Facebook.  I do call and review with him on a regular basis.  I was on the phone for an hour with him on Sunday evening.

There are changes coming to RPS, and it relates to very much this issue.  Gene nearly landed in the ER on Saturday night because of exhaustion.  Weekends like this one, put stress on his Marriage, and with everything involved, his doctor has been telling him to slow down for 2 years now.

If there's a Meet where I-S wants to get involved, the potential to have an I-S banner hanging behind the platform, could very well be available.

^^ Wow, good info.  I did wonder if there were no-shows causing issues.  I have zero experience running powerlifting meets, but I do have my own business and deal with clients.  I will say I've had to learn some hard lessons about people in general.  I've had to set up some strict rules to deal with the fact that some people just don't do what they say they are going to do.  If it was a matter of not following up properly with people ahead of the meet, that's one issue.  But sometimes people just suck, and no matter what they say and how much effort you do your end, they still don't follow through.  So yeah, I do have some sympathy on that one.

Side note: always wondered what would happen if one of those damned electronic hotel door locks failed.  :(

If I were Gene and Ame, I would pay a couple of people to help with loading and cleanup afterwards.  Two guys, a few hours each.

I don't know about down there, but up here, our high school kids must perform 40 hours of volunteer work throughout high school in order to graduate.  It'd be pretty easy to find some Grade 11 or 12 students up here to do to the work.  Most kids leave it until their last couple of years of school and are then scrambling to find the work to get their hours in.  The rule is, that the student cannot perform work that is normally performed by a paid employee.  (Otherwise, all parents would just bring their kids to work!).  Anyway, just a thought for their Canadian meets.

Great info Alex. Knew you'd have some good insight.

NO we don't make our kids do anything like that to graduate.

I'm not sure I'd even do that. Honestly, Id look to tie compensation to the venue for help with spotters, loaders, judges, set-up and clean-up. A tiered system where  they stand to lose money based on those commitments not being filled. In exchange they can make a little extra if they are. Either way I can understand it not being an easy thing to coordinate but it seems their current system is flawed and passing that blame onto the lifters or audience isn't going to get it solved.

Maybe I should answer this since I was the only one there last year  ;D

There were enough lifters for two days, but I believe there was some space left both days.  I only went on Saturday, and we got out 6-7 pm or something like that.  That having been said, I'm hearing rumblings from a number of people who did not do Utica and are headed to Buffalo instead, so it could be busier this year.

I'll have to sit this one out.  With the wife going out of town the Monday after that weekend, it'll be too much for us.  That and our finances took a hit with having to repair the damage from the water stuff.

It's typically a bigger meet than SS so I'm betting it's 14 hours.

I want to come support everyone but good grief, why not a couple days where the lifting ends at 3 or 4?  :S

The venue could be interesting in the dark, it relies pretty heavily on outside light through the windows.  It was getting pretty dark in there at 7pm last year lol.

Bando, have you looked at airBNB?  Not sure how crazy you'd be about crashing on a stranger's couch or in their spare room for the weekend, but it would be a halfway point between a $200 hotel and sleeping in the car.  Just a thought.

Yah, I'm confused.  I guess we'll find out when they post the roster next week!  Rheta will be there with something like 14 lifters, so unless IS + Hercules is 1/3 of the meet, it's a mystery.

Last year was 2 days and 3 sessions IIRC, and people seemed to like the venue.  No idea what happened.
Title: Re: No rest for the wicked - Buffalo Meet!!!

I know there are at least 4 Herc competitors. Remember, Retribution only had 16 lifters in Feb.

I'm all for a short day, still haven't nailed down lodging yet, may camp in Niagara Falls area.

I'm more apt to spot for a smaller event as well, I just don't want to be responsible for 7&800lb squats.

Looking forward to buying Ms. Lisa and FLEX a cold post comp beer.

Hmm I'm trying to think of who the 14 are. I know of about 6 or so.

Hope this isn't a prelude to Aprils meet. I know Shawn, Dave, and Andy want to do it again so hopefully it will still be a go. If not I'm sure Rheta will have a few next year.

Becki thought it was 13 or 14-ish from Herc, something like that.

I think other feds have moved into this area more, I don't know if that has anything to do with it.  WNPF is in Rochester, USAPL is now in Buffalo and Syracuse, USPA is Buffalo I think, Herc of course, and there's another one or two feds a little farther out.  I don't think there's any lack of interest for powerlifting in the area, maybe people are just getting spread thin with more meets to choose between.  I'd certainly like to see RPS stay in the area.

The officers in my club have been actively recruiting for a couple USAPL events. I've made it pretty clear I won't compete in those events and will promote/compete in RPS events. I'm going to dance with the one that brought me, especially when Alex takes over and brings a level head into the scenario.

I'm sitting right at the top of the 181.  Now with the *old* RPS scale, that thing always ran 1-2 lbs under my home scale, so I would have been totally safe just walking in and stepping on the scale.  But they have a new scale now, so who knows how that is going to go  ;D

Does anyone else not get good carryover in between different bench grips???  I guess I'll be bringing close grip to this meet again, because I just did a last minute test and it's running heavier than any other grip  ;D  I've been doing it a ton in recent months, but I honestly thought that increasing close grip would have carryover to my other grips.  I guess not!

Totally random poll... should I open deadlift with 315 or 325?  My deadlift has been down the sh*tter for the last year, but it's actually feeling like I'm back where I was, I'm just not sure how much pressure I can put on it.

My 315 plan would be less aggressive, and likely tie my old PR on the third attempt.  I am pretty confident I would hit all my lifts, and I'd be happy to confirm that my deadlift *is* back to where it was.  And I do have one more meet later this year for potential PRs.  This is probably the smarter approach.

My 325 plan would be pretty darned aggressive, I'd use my second attempt to tie or break my old PR, and leave a third attempt wide open.  I would *love* to do the 325 plan, but while I think I'd have a shot at the second attempt, I might be just throwing away the third.  That having been said, I'm leaning towards it because I'm a dumb@ss.  ;D

The direction I'm headed in currently, 2nd attempts will all either be equal to old meet PRs or up by +5.  Third attempts will be more interesting.  That is assuming I don't die on seconds, in which case we throw my corpse on the platform and I try again.

OK, well, if nobody is going to talk me out of my crazy ;D  Openers have been submitted as 255/135/325.

I'm aiming to get there around 9 or so I would guess.  It looks like about 1.5 hours from home.  Sounds like I'll be it for cheerleaders.  I'll make sure to wear my IS shirt  ;D

Made weight at 180.0 8)

Still no roster posted on the web site, but there were maybe two dozen people there when I went to early weigh-ins, and there are two other weigh-in times later.  So no idea how long tomorrow will run, but Flex, Lisa, and Dave, looking forward to seeing you then  :)

Oh, and the neighborhood around the venue looks much better this year.  Couldn't figure out what the difference was until I drove back through it heading home.  Last year every 4th house was a burned out pile of rubble.  This year they've cleared out all the ruins, so they're just open grassy lots.  That actually helped, lol. ;D

Yeah, I got there about 10:20 and several of the Herc crew were on the floor eating by then, lol.  I suspect they pretty much fell in the door when it opened at 10:00  ;D

Did not realize the Herc kid with the huge squat was going to this meet!  Looking forward to seeing him lift, that will be crazy.

800+ squat from him coming up. Marcus Morris will likely set the 181 WR with a 750-770 squat, too.

Welp.......this meet did NOT go as planned for me.

I felt good during my squat warmups.  Better than usual.  Plan was to open with 580, then 605 2nd and end with a 625 PR.

Opened with 580.  3 green lights.  No issues.

605 second attempt, unracked and wobbled a bit.  Re-racked.  Took a breath, unracked again.  OK, good.  Descent was fine.  Started coming up and POP! I pulled a muscle in my groin area.  Went down like a sack of potatoes and could not get up.  Fuck me I was lying on the platform like a fish in a boat unable to move for what seemed like forever.  Lisa came running over, Gene was hovering over me.  Fuck it was a nightmare.  I could not move or sit up or anything for what seemed like forever.  Finally was able to gain my composure and get up and walk off the platform by myself.  Queue in Ovation from the crowd.

Holy Fuck.

Didn't know what to do.  but for sure no more squats.

I couldn't sit down.

I felt like I might be able to bench.  I told Ame that I would see how things go and she was cool.

Warming up for bench I was fine except it was agony getting up.  I went 315/325/335 for my best meet bench yet.

When Lisa was warming up for deads I did a quick set and it felt OK.  So then I was thinking I'd be fine.  My opener was set at 580.

But when it was my turn to warm up for deads I pulled 225 for 2 reps and I thought I was going to collapse again.  Some dude looked at me and was like "Are you ok?".  I said "No".

I told Ame I couldn't deadlift but I didn't want to drop out of the meet.  I asked if I could do a token lift and she said that the first lift of the next flight was 255 and she would let me do that so I did.

Embarrassing as fuck but she announced I was injured which I thought was nice.

So I ended up with 580/335/255 for an 1,170 total.  Christ.

Lisa opened with 235 on squats and I called her depth but the depth Nazis were out in full force and I guess I am blind so she got 2 red lights on her opener.  She came back to get it again then 245 for a meet PR.

Bench she opened with 125 no issues but 135 got stuck 3/4 the way up.  Fuuuuuu.  She tried it again with the same results.  Bummer.

Deads she opened with 250 then 270 both lifts looked like warmups.  3rd attempt was 285 and it was perfect.

So she got a 10lb PR on squats and a 15lb PR on deads and a 15lbs meet PR.

Love this woman more than I can express in words.

TL;DR:  Lisa is awesome and I need to hang up my belt.

Cheers;  :beerchug:

It is always a pleasure to lift with Lisa and Flex, and huge thanks to Dave for coming out, cheering and helping  :)  There were some absolutely amazing lifts at this meet.  Mad respect to Flex for scaring the crap out of everyone and then walking off like a boss and continuing on at the meet.

My day was a mixed bag.  I've been having some troubles with my bad hip in the least week or so, and warming up for squats I felt really lopsided.  Oddly enough, once I was out on the platform I felt fairly even, and my greatest problem was sinking my depth waaaaaayyyy too deep again.  Put up an easy 255 as an opener, failed 275 as a too-deep second attempt, came back with 275 as a successful third attempt, with Flex calling depth for me and got it that time.   It was a good thing he called it, I initially forgot he was there until I heard him shout out and was like OH YEAH!  If it hadn't been for that, I would have just kept right on going again, lol.

I was very disappointed in my bench.  My strength was fine, I just made stupid mistakes.  My opener at 135 was really easy.  My second attempt at 145 went up fast as well, but my butt came off the bench a little, so it was redlighted.  I opted for 150 as a third, but somewhere in between struggling with the weight and trying to NOT let my butt come up, I strained the lower left side of my back.  So I only got 135 on bench, and was worried I'd knocked myself out of commission on deads because initially, my back was really bothering me.  I wound up rolling out my lower back with my lacrosse ball, and between that and quite a long break in between bench and deads, luckily it did ease up.

Deads were great.  I completely screwed up the timing of my warm-ups.  Initially I started warming up 45 minutes too early until someone pointed out it was too early, so I went back out to the meet and sat down.  Then I came back later to start warming up again, and was just moving too leisurely, before I knew it I was four people out.  So I wound up jumping from a 255 warm up lift to 325 as an opener on the platform.  Oops.  325 launched up though, which may make me reconsider how much I should warm up for deads at future meets, lol.  I went to 340 as a second, it felt a little grungy off the ground but moved fast after that, for a new all-time PR.  And of course I just had to try for 350 as a third, because... well... 350.  I didn't get it.  But I actually got the darned thing moving, it got stuck, I got it moving again, then it got stuck a second time and I just didn't have anything left.  But I think that one isn't too far away ;)  I got one heck of a CNS buzz from the attempt though, lol.

Ultimately I went 275/135/340 for a total of 750, which is +20 from my previous meet total.  Looks like I'll need to start chasing 800 at future meets, and I'll get a good chunk of the way there the second I learn how to KEEP MY BUTT ON THE BENCH  ;D

That would be the down side of going to a meet you're not lifting in, lol.  That's pretty much the only reason I signed up for Iron Maiden, I wanted to go watch it anyway but figured I'd be pounding my head against a wall if I wasn't lifting, too  ;D

Good stuff.

I don't think you give yourself much credit for your deads, but every time I've seen you deadlift your strength really comes through when you call on your body to do as it's told. You can always use that final lift to get lbs in your total you wanted from earlier lifts, sounds like you pretty well nailed it, congrats on the PR's!

Ain't gonna lie; I feel broken, but a smidge better than yesterday.

Gonna rest up this week and see how things go.  May switch to "bodybuilding mode" if the groin doesn't heal up quick.

I've had to do that a few times.  I injured my quad last year at the meet, not bad enough to stop lifting, pain went away after about 10 days or so.  Hopefully you heal up quickly too.

Wow....had not been following this thread, but really awesome to read and sh!tty at the same time.   Congrats to all those that competed.

@Flex.....give it a little time.   The depression can be very real when you get injured.  Dont let it eat you up.  Make sure if you tore something....start rehabbing NOW.   Light stretching, massaging...etc.   Having been through a few good tears (never more than grade 2) I can say I bounced back from all of them.

As for the decision to switch up training, I can lend some perspective....but now is not the time.   I am sure you will do well at anything you decide.   You have a great partner in life, and an injury is only a temporary set back.   Best wishes.....

Thanks again Flex, you're the best!

Actually really interesting to see the 350 fail, I think I see what killed it.  After the bar got stuck the first time, it started coming up faster on the left than the right, so when it got stuck the second time I was mid-knee on the left and below-knee on the right.  Bar coming up faster on the left is actually from the posterior chain imbalances I'm still working on, so there ya go.
