Title: Is there any benefit to increasing reps instead of adding weight
Post by: Geoff on January 21, 2017, 03:48:59 AM
In regards to squatting,I generally only can get to around 175 lb squatting before I start to get back trouble.
is there any advantage to increasing the amount of reps if i cannot increase weight ?

Absolutely, but only to a point I think.

IMHO once you get to 15+ reps the benefits will taper off, but if you can do that many reps you could probably add some weight and back off on the reps, then work back up, add some weight, rinse and repeat.

It's really a solid strategy.

If you're going to do high rep stuff I would ditch the 5x5 and just do your own thing.

Keep track each week and try to get to say 12 reps with your current weight then add 10 lbs or whatever then work to get back to 12 reps with that new weight, rinse and repeat.

IMHO there's not much point following a program and bastardizing it.  Might as well just do your own thing.
