Title: Struggles With Consistency v2.0
Post by: Little Tim on November 20, 2015, 08:12:08 AM
Ok, not even gonna link the last online journal but here's the cliffs:
-Bro split with no reward
-Full body workout with some reward
-Stronglifts 5x5 worked really well but burned out
-Hybrid'ed 5x5 into a DUP-style that had a good run, got inconsistent
-Restarted the H5x5 again for a few weeks and got inconsistent again
-Started a new job that threw a monkey wrench into everything, been very inconsistent since, usually hitting the weights for a few days and regretting it for the next few days.

So.... Back to the pink dumbbells!

Squats:
Warmup 2x10@BW
2x8@BAR
2x8@95#

Deadlift:
1x8@BAR
3x8@135#

Incline DB BP:
1x8@25#
1x8@35#

DB Rows:
1x8@40#
1x8@50#

...And that'll be it for today.

What's the plan?
-Gonna re-establish consistency by going back to Full Body Workouts for a few weeks (3 or 4) without too much focus other than getting in there and punching the clock, wake up a few things, remember what the hell I forgot.
-Probably at that point jump back on the SL's train and ramp back up where I'll transition into something else, most likely a FBW variation.

Cheers.

Welcome back Tim!

Good move easing back into.  A full body routine done 3 times a week should yield you good results for a while.

Thank you gentlemen.  Had a few jump back into its, so this time around I'm going to establish is routine.  Even with as low as my numbers were yesterday, woke up this morning with a little stiffness/soreness.

This morning's quickie:

Front Squats
5x5@45#

Deads
5x5@135#

Triset:
BB OHP 3x8@65#
EZ Curls 3x8@55#
Cable Tri PD's 3x8@45#

And that's all folks.

Will add in a touch of cardio after I get this rolling first.

Welcome back TIM!  Stay a while.  ;)

Every time I intend to.  Life just tends to muscle in.  Going into the "slow (er)" season,  so I should have 3 months to get going before other things intrude.

Oh, doms suck. Enough argument to never stop when starting hurts so wonderfully.

God bless Mondays.

Slow start this morning, got a touch of insomnia over the past few days.  Gonna have to get back to the farmer lifestyle of early to bed, early to rise.

1x5@95#
3x5@135#

Deads
2x5@135#
3x5@185#

DB BP
1x8@20#
1x8@30#
2x8@40#

EZ BB BOR
1x12@45#
3x8@65#

Dun for today.  Some lingering soreness, nothing unexpected.

Weights are good for that. I like to lay in bed and count my reps and sets like other people count sheep.

That's far more conducive to drifting off to sleep with a nice high volume program,  I'm barely scratching triple digits.

Squats 5x5 @ 95#
BB BP 5x5 @ 115#
BOR 5x5 @ 85#

Yup, defaulted to SL 5x5, with the little mod of Front Squats on opposite days of Back Squats.

Feeling good about these poundages for starting points.

Life's good.

Front Squats 5x5 @ 65#

A little stiffness from yesterday, nothing too bad. Feeling good on these poundages as a starting point.

One day of rest turned into two. Back at it.

Squats 5x5 @ 105#
BB BP 5x5 @ 125#
BOR 5x5 @ 105#

Short and sweet.

Been starting to address nutrition.  Just looking to increase awareness about what I'm shoveling into my pie hole.

Title: Re: Struggles With Consistency v2.0

Standard weight increases and just feeling it out. I bumped up the BOR by 20 instead of 10. Everything else has been by 10#, and as I approach my limits I'll reign that back to 5# jumps.

I well remember how weight gets heavy fast on 5x5.  :o

Yup,  starting off a bit low is always wise when it comes to a progressive resistance program like SL 5x5.  I'm assuming that everything is at about 60%, bumping a little aggressive until it gets real challenging.  I'm actually looking forward to the failure and reset.  It's been too long since the weights scared me.

I think with this mornings early session that everything is about right, but we'll see in the next day or two.

ION, typical nutrition plan coming together. Calories king, protein queen.  Focusing right now on awareness and consistency, not going to do any tracking or restricting until after the Christmas holiday weekend.  New years isn't really anything more than a late shift for me anyways.  Really gotta get some of this extra weight off that I've accumulated since starting this job last year and not making time for training.

Cheers.

Great day for some afternoon iron.  Funny how much easier everything is lifting midday versus rolling out of bed. Broke a good sweat.

Squats 5x5 @ 115#
BB BP 5x5 @ 135#
BOR 5x5 @ 115#

Got a nice mini pump off the benchpresses.

Cheers.

Front Squats 5x5 @ 85#
OHP 5x5 @ 75#
Deadlift 5x5 @ 205#

Hoping to double up another 2 sessions this week as Saturday won't get one in and I'll probably be burnt out too bad to do anything productive Sunday morning.

Squats 5x5 @ 125#
Benchpress 5x5 @ 145#
BOR 5x5 @ 125#

Every movement was a bit challenging by the 3rd set. That'll teach me to do three days in a row.  So I'll be outie the next two then back at it Sunday.

Weights moving up fast. If you're increasing 10 every time you'll be at 185 for squats in 2 weeks.
Me....I went 10 total each week versus each session like SS has after the first time. Felt a lot better.

Farmer's Walks 50# each + Handles (38# each)

Great afternoon session in the basement.  New bar, new farmer's handles, life's good.

The bar is almost certainly a rebranding of the rogue crossfit 2.0, 28.5mm, 165k tensile. This is world's apart from the other two bars I have that came with my Barbell and Weider weight sets.  Knurling is like velcrow on the hands, no slip even with a light sweat.  No bending or budging at the 215#, felt like a single peice of iron.

Farmer's handles are beefy, one solid peice of chromed steel.  I will need to make a quantitative length for a "rep." So far I've just been walking a 20 foot length and first time turned around, second time was setting it down and turning around and relifting.  Basically doing trap bar deadlifts after conventional deadlifts will probably rip me up tomorrow, we'll see.  (Ironically I walked in the store for a trap bar/farmers walk hybrid bar). WIll probably fabricate some kind of a rack around this issue.  Any feedback is welcome.

Oh and for my local friends, it was Christian's Fitness Factory in Lancaster, walked in the store and walked out with almost $500 list price for $310.  That is almost the list price for the rogue bar.
Merry Christmas.

Awoke with a slight soreness.  Meh.

Squats 5x5 @ 135#
BB BP 5x5 @ 150#
BOR 5x5 @ 135#

Squats are starting to challenge me. Benchpresses are pushing hard, going to slow the progression to 5# jumps.  BOR are getting good too. Wrapped up with some farmers walks and a few minutes working the heavybag.

Still in the mid 230's. That's gotta change.

Front Squats 5x5 @ 105#
OHP 5x5 @ 85#
Deadlift 5x5 @ 225#

Whole midsection was weak, probably from the 7 hours of driving.  Still made it through.

Life's good.

Squats 5x5 @ 145#
Benchpress 5x5 @ 155#
BOR 5x5 @ 145#

Lost count on the squats,  probably did 7 sets. Quads were quivering.  Bench was getting challenging.  Same with the rows. Finished with some farmers walks.

Got some beef shanks in the slow cooker and a pork shoulder brining for New Years.

Life's good.

Everything is getting challenging.  God bless progressive overload resistance programs.  Still have plenty of ground to cover,  but it'll be with the micro plates from here on out.

Life's good.

Extended break there, 4 days out.

Squats 5x5 @ 155# - Was a shock to the legs.
Benchpress 5x5 @ 135# - Reigned in to allow progression.
BOR 5x5 @ 155# - Getting tough.

Reset BBBP knowing that out of the 6 lifts in the program,  it is the highest risk without much reward for me at least.  Squats induced some nausea oddly enough.  BOR are getting tougher, last run of SL 5x5 it was more of my lower back limiting me more than the weights.  Going to try to avoid that mistake again even if it means stalling rather than resetting.

Life's good.

Day off today too, so back-to-back it is.

Front Squats 5x5 @ 115#

Almost stalled on last set of OHP.  Everything else was good.

Cheers.

Nice amount of fatigue yesterday.

Today:
Squats 5x5 @ 160#
BBBP 5x5 @ 140#
BOR 5x5 @ 160#

Bench was more difficult only because of ending Tuesdays training with some BS arm sets. BOR are challenging.

Not hitting the floor with each rep, but close, only because of my gut and short femurs if I did a traditional BOR  I'd have about 8 inches of ROM.

So somewhere between the two.  And I'm using my EZ Bar,  mostly for elbow health.  Sure there's a proper name for it.  DOH EZ BOR?

Hey, if it works there's no problem.

My lower back does not like traditional BOR so I stick with Pendlays or T-bar rows.

Damn, been a whole week.

Fighting the snow has had consequences.  For one, whole midsection is torn up from tossing snow. Secondly is a bit of realization that I'm in need of addressing my stamina,  had to take 5 minute breathers between shoveling.  Wasn't too bad,  I just like choosing when to take a break, not my heart/lungs.

Today's fun:
Dreadmill 10 minutes light
Squats 3x5 @ 175#
Benchpress ramp up and down.
No BOR.  Not pushing that envelope.
Dreadmill 10 minutes light

That's all for today.  Didn't mark today as progress on my whiteboard,  will skate through a SL 5x5 B workout either tomorrow or Saturday,  then hopefully everything will get back to normal and pick up progression where I left off.

Cheers.

Let's re-boot this journal, good to see I'm keeping with the title's theme.  Haven't been keeping the faith, fighting the good fight.  Since my last official post in the journal section back in January, things have tapered off a bit, then fizzled out completely over the past three months.  No real reason besides the lack of living with priorities. Pure & Simple as that.

Did a light session of bodyweight and bar only squats (these tend to take the most time to get back without injury) deadlifts, and followed it up with some light incline DB presses and few minutes on the treadmill. Plan for tomorrow will be the same squats and deads with DB rows and a few minutes on the treadmill. Nothing fancy.
Plan is to do this for two weeks and start adding weight and playing with rep/sets.

Got a little soft in the midsection as well, easy to do when I'm not really paying attention.  So that'll be the other main priority when it comes to this journal.  Not going to go all scientific-y like my past all-or-nothing attempts, just going to eat slightly smaller portions all around and see how it reflects on the scale before adding more work for myself.

Summer season is winding down at my employer, so there is less pressure on that facet of life.  Big goals will be simple as going to bed on time, getting quality sleep, punching the clock on workouts and good sensible eating.

Let's see how far I can go on common sense.

Cheers.

Welcome back Tim. Glad to see you back, working out and journaling.
Thanks.

ION, didn't get anything accomplished yesterday as something special happens when I start squatting, and it resides somewhere in the hamstrings toward the inner thigh.  Not bellyaching, just noting.

Today, did another super-light day of BW and Bar only squats, 135 deads, EZ & DB rows, some crunches, and a few minutes on the treadmill.

My longest run of consistency was the every-other day program with disregard for how it fell in the week, so I'll be starting down this road.

Cheers.

I skipped legs this week AGAIN... I did something to my left knee, I think from running. It feels like I pulled something, hurts when I poke at it. ;)

I'm gonna give it another week and see how it is.

Hope you didn't do anything to your hamstring. Being injured really sucks.

Nah, just part of the fun in being inconsistent.  Once I get back into the swing of things,  it'll be good again.  No other muscle gives me as much grief as that damn inside part of the hammy.

Debated making a post today.

I did set the alarm clock to get up early,  win.

I did wake up,  win.

Then I saw the text message of a staffer calling out for her 6am shift, fail.

So no basement training today, just an unavoidable 15 hour shift.

Been doing BW squats whenever and wherever I can,  got some tendons that are being pussies right now, but no muscle strain anymore.

Another light, re-introduction session.

Squats BW 3x8+
Deadlifts 135#, 4x8
DB Incline press x8, 30#,35#,40#
OHP 45# 2x8, 65# 2x8

Got some plantar faciatis (sp?) bugging the hell out of me. Chalk it up to shaking out the cobwebs, fight on (just not on the treadmill, for now).

Cheers.

Get in there and knock the cobwebs off. You'll be back to your old routine before you know it.

Well.... Given certain current events, now that I'm back on my side of the state, a few priorities need to change around the house. So, spent a few minutes in the old basement home gym, just a few light sets of OHP, deads, tri-pressdowns, and air squats.
I'll probably bounce back into a SL 5x5 again, as that's a simple progressive resistence program.

Cheers.

Thanks PD!

Finished the day with a 10 minute brisk walk on the treadmill.  This will progressively increase as well.

Been curious about 'juicing' my veggies for the day,  initially it was just the wife wanting to try this fad. Knew that my boss had unsuccessfully attempted a 'cleanse' with a breville,  I got to borrow his for her to play around with figuring the appeal would wane after a few rounds..... well, ours came in the mail today.  Still natty though, just getting my veggies in.

Not much protein in veggies, should get a Bass-O-Matic:

Y'all are nuts, couldn't play the vid on my obsolete smart phone, but I can imagine Dan Ackeroyd and a fishy drink.  I'm just looking to suppliment some veggies with enough fruities so it don't taste like grass clippings.  So far it's been tolerable/borderline enjoyable.  Not tackling the nutrition side of things too much until I get setteled into a routine of lifting & cardio.

Which brings me to today:

Another clearing the cobwebs day of bodyweight squats, slight incline benchpresses, and some BOR's. Followed it up with 15 minutes of walking (not challenging, but just getting in the groove).

Not much to report beyond that.  Will be playing with starting weights in another run of SL 5x5, as that's been good to me in the past, with alternating front squat days like before.

Life's good.

Glad you're back at it.

You should watch the vid sometime, Dan puts a whole a bass in a blender, tail and all while selling the bass-o-matic. Hands the glass of pureed raw fish to Lorraine Newman who takes a drink and exclaims "MMM That's good Bass!"

Day late, but not a dollar short.

Squats 5x5 @ 45#
OHP 5x5 @ 45#
Deadlift 5x5 @135#
Dreadmill 15 minutes with a bit of jogging.

That was quicker than I thought. Light weights feel like barely warm-up poundages, so not much need for warm-ups yet.

Life's good.

Thanks gentlemen. Its just all part of my long term plan to capitalize on newbie gains over and over again.  You know,  if that was an actual thing, I'm proof it's not.  Best shape I was in was after about an 18 month stretch.

Today's fun:
Front Squats 5x5 @ 45#
Benchpress 5x5 @ 95#
BOR 5x5 @ 65#

Skipping cardio,  plantar faciatitis is inflamed,  it sucks.

Settling in for the night and just realized I didn't mention the 25 minutes of additional treadmill time I logged in this morning.  Not going crazy on the intensity,  just a respectable incline  (8%) as fast as it takes to jack up my pulse, currently about 2.5mph, but that'll increase as I get back into the groove.

Time for more iron in 9 hours.

Joined..... a...... gym..... tonight.
Nothing fancy,  a little bit bigger than PF, a little smaller than golds. Biggest factors were price, location and equipment.  Specifically cardio equipment,  specifically the stair mill. Got another goal in mind that involves hiking a decent distance over the course of a week with a 30# pack, something around 10k feet of elevation change on each of the two sections.

So of course I started off with 5 minutes on the rower.

Squats 5x5 @ 115#
Then moved on to a Benchpress machine thingamabobber, basically did a pyramid set of 8 reps working down the stack.  Then same deal on the cable row machine.

Then about 5 minutes on the stairmill that got my HR up to 160 very quickly.

Called it a night.

Lots of fun coming!

Starting with rowing is always good IMO.

Why bench press machine and not free weights?

Why bench press machine and not free weights?

Partly too lazy to move a bench over to one of the 2 half racks (but they do have 8 smiths, just against my religion to use a smith for Benchpress), but mostly cause it's been years since I been out of my basement gym and wanted to try these feats of technology.   Just having all these new toys will open a new world of programming.

Although my first priorities are dropping some of this deadweight and increasing cardio capacity  (that one should be much easier than the first one).

Holy moley,  just realized I never logged yesterday.  Does it still count?

Feeling it loud and clear today though.

So.... let me remember this....
Started on the rower.
Squats 5x5 @ 95, 105, then 115 for the last 3.
Decided to frankenstein an arm day in, shoulder press machine was all wonky, so moved on to DB's.
8 x 25#
8 x 3 @ 35#

Lat pulldowns
8 x 3 @ 120#

Cable Tri PD's w/rope
8 x 4 @ 40#

Bi Curls
8 x 2 @ 25

Then over to the stepmill for 5 minutes of fun.  17 stories of steps, if I remember correctly.  Again, heart rate jacked up almost immediately, but this time I backed off trying to get a little more time, looks like it just has to build up on its own gradually.

So, yeah, got a little stiff/soreness going on today, enough to pop an alieve halfway through the day.

Onwards and upwards.
Cheers.

Truth in journaling (at least the title).

Gotta play catch up here, the bulk of my headache of getting the summer season ready and rolling is about done. Got the mid summer menu change to iron out and fourth of July,  then it's smooth sailing for awhile.

Dusting off the cobwebs. Lots of laying down or standing in my life,  not much between,  so squats are a killer at the moment, even at an empty bar.

Hiatus from the online journaling is over.

Nothing to report in 'gains' unless you consider a few more revolutions around the sun to be something special.

Currently getting some physical therapy done for a bum knee that coincidentally happened just about the time of the previous post,  but causation and correlation are different things.
In layman's terms,  I got junk building up under my patella, which makes my quads lazy, and systematically each causes the other to get worse...times 3 years.
So lots of isolated movements,  about 45 minutes to an hour a day of "homework". And with that, it was a good excuse to get an indoor bike, doc's reccomendation.

Been doing the journaling on paper for three weeks,  but it's time to get real that I'm carrying around this pseudo laptop phone all day and can make it work for me more.
