Title: BLK's Big 3 Lifts
Post by: BLK00TJ on May 10, 2014, 10:44:27 AM
I'm starting this thread to track my big 3 powerlift movements.  It'll be interesting to compare earlier lifts to recent ones as I progress and get stronger.

These were my lifts from my 1st meet on 5/3/14.  Squat and bench were not PRs for me in the meet (well, squat was for RAW Classic, no wraps), but they were close to PRs and judged to be legitimate lifts by 3 judges.

370lb Deadlift

I'll post followups as I achieve more PRs and have video.

Yeah buddy.  Another meet, another PR vid.  I tied my bench and deadlift meet PRs and got a 35 lbs squat meet PR.  It was also a 10 lb all-time PR for me as well.

It'll be broken on May 2, 2015.  I hope to be over 400 by then.  Gotta lot of work to do to get into the same flights as Alex and Flex  :D

Nice work Ron.

Thanks man.  You've been a huge help to me with your advice and encouragement.  I am already thinking of next year.  If you ever get sent to Taneytown again, give me a shout so we can grab a beer.  I'm trying to talk the wife into coming next year and make a short vacation out of it to go the the falls next year.

New 5lb gym PR from today on bench.  I'm going to shoot for 260 for my mock meet.  This was 250.  I hit the damn upright though.  >:(

Congrats.  Did you consider throwing on the extra 5 pounds to make it an even 400?  I might have a hard time passing that up.

This week was my light week but the weights were feeling good.  I held off from going for a true max.  I'll be doing a mock-meet in 2 weeks where I'll shoot for 405.  Until then, I'll stick with 395 and probably try to get two sets of them in next week.

I fell victim to peer pressure and decided to do a single with 395 then up it to 405 for 4 pretty plates per side for my first time since returning to the iron.  Thanks for the gentle push Flex :bigthumb:

http://youtu.be/b36ABS0r4aA (http://youtu.be/b36ABS0r4aA)

If all goes well, I'll be posting 3 new PR videos next weekend.   8)

Planned lifts are:

Squat:  375, 410, 425?
Bench:  240, 255, 260?
Deadlift:  350, 380, 405?

All PRs on 2nd attempts.
Deadlift is a real big ? still though.

Great job Ron. Your PR's point out to me that I really have an issue with my squats, comparitive to my other lifts.

My best single for bench is 275 but my best squat is 245 ( best DL is 370 for 1 ). Something is really wrong and I can't figure out what.  :(

Thanks guys.  Eric, I feel that my squat is progressing as it should but my other lifts are too slow at progression.  Most folks can deadlift more than they squat until they get up to the elite weights where leverages or grip gives way.  My deadlift sucks and should IMO be upwards of 450+.  However to date it is only 370.  I missed 2 tries at 375 a couple weeks ago.  My bench took a big hit on my last cut.  I hope to retain strength better on my next cut (soon).

Your squat is definitely progressing. Mine stopped a long time ago.  :o  I have basically stopped DL'ing since messing up my back so I no longer think I'll hit my 405 this year. Still pushing hard on bench though.

I know for sure everything will drop once I start a cut, assuming I do in January.

Good luck hitting 1000.  :D

Two new PRs from this weekend's mock-meet.  Should have been 3, but my deadlift is stuck, stalled, and just plain blows.  I hit 435 on squat for a 30lb PR and 255 on bench for a 5lb PR.  That's 60lb on my squat and 15lb on bench since the August meet.  I easily got my 1000lb finally with a 1050lb total.

Nah... Wife is already giving me hell about the return of the gut.  I'm only 178 now but I'm going to cut back down under 170.  I'm confident in my squat not regressing but can probably expect to lose a bit on my bench.  Deadlift, I'm seriously considering getting some private coaching at SSPT about an hour away from me in Rockville, MD.  Goal is to hit 450/275/450 for May's meet.

My first DL PR in almost a year.  Only a 5lb PR, but a PR is a PR.  After this, I attempted 385 but couldn't get it past my knees.  This one really took a lot out of me though as I dropped to 355 and grinded that out.  After my meet, I'm going to stay away from heavy deadlifts for a while and work on form and accessory lifts to bring it up.  Maybe run a cycle of SSPT singles to work on form.

Congrats. I'm staying away from them for elbow reasons, but I don't think you lose much by not doing them if you're doing your heavy squats and some back stuffs.

Two more from today.  +5lb PR on squat and bench press.  The bench press felt so good I did 2 sets of it and thinking maybe, just maybe 275 could be within reach in 2 weeks for the meet.  I'm thinking of 450 for squat too.

That was the 2nd set too.  The first was faster, but I wasn't happy with the length of pause at the bottom so I posted up the purdy, 2nd one.  I'm doing 2 more sets of them tomorrow and saving up for the meet.  I'll be working up to 95% of goal for 2 sets on all 3 lifts.

Just hope Gene does not judge you, you'll be holding it on your chest awhile. I may actually just rest it if he judges me again.

here's my Retribution phail, I count 2 seconds of just holding it on my chest. Aint nobody got time for that.

That looked about right to me.  I've been pausing so long on all my sets that my touch-n-go is about the same strength.

Dan green sinks the bar into his chest a lot.  Might want to try his technique.  I think I remember him saying he launches the bar into movement with his chest using his leg drive.

Watch his bench.  It looks like he completely relaxes losing arch and everything.  Upon the bench command, BOOM! ARCH! DRIVE! and the bar bounces up and he seems to just finish with his triceps.  That bar sinks DEEP dough.

Nothing in the rules says you can't as long as your ass stays on the bench.  He just asks that you inform the judges you are a "sinker" in the rules meeting.

Dan Green admits that sinking is a way to "cheat" by using his body to push the bar out of the hole and then use that momentum to drive the bar up. Just make sure your leg drive is on point or you may get pinned.
Also you are correct, it's not against the rules

Technically, this isn't a PR for me, but it's the only video I have of me benching 275 since I didn't get any vidz at my last meet.  For this reason, I did it twice. 8)

Yes, it's a meager 5lb PR on deadlift and still IMO 50lbs shy of what I'd think is respectable for my weight but I'll take any new weight on the bar as a positive sign.

My new PRs!  There really should be 3 of them for this post, but I got a little nervous after grinding out 275 for my 2nd attempt on bench.  I lowered my planned 3rd attempt from 285 to 280 to ensure a meet PR but the 280 went up faster than 275 did.

squat:  475 - 20lb PR (50lb meet PR)

That one will stand for a long, long time
1 year, 6 days.  No longer mine.  Someone squated 415 a week after our NY meet. Kinda makes me want to cut back to 165 one last time.

It's been way too long since I have been able to post to this thread.

Anyways, since I don't use wraps anymore and just sleeves, I'm resetting my squat PR.  Last May, I established my raw squat PR with 380 but wasn't able to get video since I was competing solo.  Today, I added 5 lbs to that while being 20lbs lighter.  I wasn't planning on testing my lowbar but hip felt fine after not lowbar squatting for a bunch of weeks.
