RPS Spring Supremacy 2018
« on: November 09, 2017, 03:30:10 PM »
I got the call from Gene today.  He first up, apologized because he felt like a bit of a hypocrite.  He wanted me to reach out to Bando in regards to possibly finding a new Venue for Spring Supremacy.  After everything that happen with Bando and RPS, Gene realized it had come back to bite him.

Gene is looking for a new home for Spring Supremacy and quite possibly Annihilation (October).  He's looking in Mid to Up-state NY.  If any of you have a venue that is possible, please let me know.  I'll likely be the one making the trip to visit it, and iron out details. The Meet schedule is weigh-ins at 9am on Friday, setup, Friday from noon to 6, Meet will run Saturday, pick up Saturday night, and out around midnight.  If you know of a Church, rec building, or gym, that can host a Meet, please don't hesitate to let me know.

So, Bando, and you guys & Gals in NY, I'm hoping you can help make this Meet happen.

Oh, and Hercules is a No-Go...

I really liked the place in Rochester where we did our first meet in 2013; what's wrong with that?

Also liked the place we had it last year.  Parking was shit and washrooms were rough but it was a good venue IMHO.

Shame he won't do it at Hercules.  Loved it there.

He's looking at the one in Rochester.  Two things have happened that makes it unlikely.  The original reason for leaving there, was that Gene was expanding to two days, but the Church wouldn't allow that Sunday to be used.  In recent years that Meet has declined a bit, and Gene could do it in one day.  However, the Pastor that wanted the Meet there (the MMA Pastor) was recently removed.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2017/09/11/fight-church-pastor-charged-forcible-touching/655912001/

So, that kinda rules that place out...

The Place last year, didn't have the space that Gene wants for a Meet.  It worked, but he wasn't happy with the set-up, so he's looking for a larger venue, with better parking, access, and amenities.

Hercules is having a few issues from what I've heard.  Then again, rumors get filtered and there's some truth behind them.  Rheta and her Boyfriend split up a few months back.  Her boyfriend is the one with all the credit, and all the loans are in his name.  Rheta's been having trouble with keeping members, which in turn, causes stress for her Ex to make the loans. I'm not sure how tough it is, but there has been some attrition from the gym.

As well as Bando, if any of you up in NY know of a possible venue, please let me know.

That must make things awkward as fuck.  It's his gym, no?

The Club isn't really excited about this. They want to compete against kids their own age and go to Collegiate Nationals. They are qualified for that from competing at the recent USAPL meet.

But I'm sure we can scare up lifters/spotters/loaders

Ugh, that sucks about the pastor at Victory.  I liked that place as a venue.

If I ever get back into my gym, I can ask some people there if they have any ideas.  My gym itself could never host something like this (sh*t parking, etc.), but the gym owner used to promote bodybuilding shows in the area, so maybe he'd have some ideas.

For my own selfish purposes, it would be great to bring it back to Rochester  ;D

Just a thought off the top of my head.  There's a big old hotel sitting right off the interstate exit 46 in Rochester, ridiculously easy to get to, very accessible, parking should be great.  Used to be a Holiday Inn or something.  My alma mater, RIT, bought it some time ago. They use it for overflow student housing, events and whatever else.  Hotels aren't the coolest venues ever for meets, but it might be worth looking into as an option.

I vote we just find a really big steakhouse and host the meet there.

You laugh, but I've seriously been trying to find a Chinese Buffet to do weigh-ins at.  Step off the scale, walk over and grab a plate.

The other thing that plays into all of this, is that for a one day event (setup Friday, Compete on Saturday, Breakdown Sat. Night), Gene has a budget of $1500.

Makes perfect sense to me, lol.

Hmmm.  Well, I have no idea what it costs, but I'd guess the hotel I suggested above would exceed that.  Well, there's a big high school locally that hosts a number of bodybuilding shows.  It's not a bad venue, but it's a pain to get to north of the city, and parking could be a huge problem if there's any sort of student sporting event going on that weekend (and in April - there probably would be).  I'm sure it would be inexpensive, but... probably not worth looking into.

Only other thing that comes to mind in Rochester, that I would hope would be less expensive, is community centers.  The JCC would probably be the best bet.  Never been there myself, but I've heard nothing but good things about it.  I used to go to the gym with a guy who wound up transferring over to the JCC's gym instead, it had such a nice facility.  So they're definitely not anti-weightlifting  ;D  They do rent out space to the general public for events.  Location should be decent, it's about 10 minutes away from the old Victory location.
https://jccrochester.org/about-the-jcc/col/facility-rentals

I'll ask around and see if anyone I know has other suggestions, but that may be pretty much it for Rochester.   Yay, us.  ::)
