Panic time
« on: December 14, 2015, 10:32:05 AM »
Anyone else get super freaked out before a meet.  I have a meet on the 26th.  My training was in the toilet, but has been going great the past month.  Then, there was yesterday.  A week out from the meet, and everything felt heavy as hell.  My plan for the meet is 400,425,450/ 275,295,305 / 425, 465, 475+.  I may go up on the bench, but the third attempt in squat and dl would be pr's.  So, yesterday a 410 squat, and a 455 deadlift both felt like max effort lifts.  I almost bailed on the squat and it literally felt like the hardest squat I've ever done.  I hope I was just having an off day, but man the meet is in my head big time.  I have a bench night Tuesday, then it's pretty much deload time.

Anyone have any advice on how to get there mentally?

Absolutely.  I've only done 4 meets so this is still relatively new to me and I get nervous as hell.

The caffeine doesn't help.

But once I get going the adrenaline takes over and it comes together.

Good luck.

What messes with me the most is timing the knee wraps. I usually wrap when I'm 2 out, but it cuts really close.

I've had the same problem, so I ditched the knee wraps this go around.  I switched to sbd sleeves.  There's really no rebound, but they do give pretty good support.

  Ok, so this is how stupid I am.  As I was typing this response I realized that the 410 I did yesterday was the heaviest I've ever done without wraps.  I really didn't think they gave me that much more, but maybe they did.  I've done 420 at a meet, and 425 at home, but used wraps for both.  My training this past month with the sleeves has been going great, but yesterday was my first time over 400 in the sleeves.  I might bring the wraps to the meet, just in case. ;)  I still think it was an off day though.  I did a 455 deadlift and it felt like it was cemented to the floor.  I know this is tmi, but I also needed a few potty breaks.  Not sure if my guts where a mess from a bug, or if it was just nerves.  I worked out in a commercial gym just to get out of my comfort zone, and I apparently need to get out more.

I did a push / pull event yesterday, RPS Lump of Coal.

Week prior my openers felt heavy -- and trust me when I tell you I have been working with my openers for many weeks now... I should be able to get them on my worst day... for a couple reps.

Confidence seems to crumble until that first lift flies up.....  I am sure though, over time, the nervousness dwindles a bit.. hope so.

Of course, I think I pissed 80 times or more at the meet.... arms shaking like mad on my bench opener.

Good times.. good times...  hah...
