Der Alta's New Toys
« on: October 30, 2013, 01:07:49 PM »
I've used a Slingshot in the past, and a friend lent me his for a few weeks.  My triceps are stubborn, and I can't get them to grow. With the Slingshot, I could blast my tri's and not cook my Pecs.  Made for killer arm work outs.

So, a recent influx of spendable income gave me an extra bit of cash.  Looking at my long list of "Stuff I need for Training" this one was at the top.  I debated back and forth about the Original vs. the Maddog.  The original would work, but I know that in the upcoming years, my bench will grow and I'll be pushing into territory where the Maddog will benefit me more than the original.  So, I ordered the Maddog.  Just a quick test here at the office, I slipped it on, and doing pushups was easy and I could bounce 4 inches off the floor (10cm for you north of the border folk).  All that remains to be seen, is if I second guess myself and think I should have picked up the Original.

Review coming after a few uses.

Got an original, still haven't used it. I think if I used it once I'd use it more though.
This is all too reasonable. It will end in tears.

Current PR's
Deadlift 525
Squat 455
Bench 335
OHP 235

Give me a week or so to test out my new one, and I'll give word on ifI really like it, or think I should have gone with the original.

What kicks me, is that they're releasing a new one (called FullBoar) that has tapered sleeves.  Fits bigger arms easier.

Hopefully, I'll not be regretting my choice for the Maddog.

You don't need that.

Do you think it was definitely the Slingshot that caused the injury?  I'm not insinuating it wasn't, considering I use one on a regular basis, I'm wondering if it is putting me in a situation similar to yours, in the it's not "If" I get injured, but "When".

I really can't say.

The guy that spotted me was crowding the bar and I think I just wasn't set up properly for the lift.

So, when you rehab your shoulder, will you continue to use the Slingshot, or has it put you in a mistrusting sense about it?

When I use it, and go for the heavy sets that are much heavier than I can handle, there's only a few guys in the gym that I trust to spot me.  For the weights that I can handle, and I am going for high reps, I just make sure to have the safety bars in place.

The Slingshot has its very distinct advantages, but like using a shirt, it has a very distinct disadvantage.  The possibility of injury is considerably higher because you're using weights beyond your capability.

I'll still use it.

I always tell people to stand back when they're spotting me so I can set up.

If you watch my vid you'll see I grab the bar and slide way back, then plant my feet and slide forward again to get my arch.

He was standing right with his belly to the bar so I couldn't do that. Not sure if that led to the injury, but...

With the Strongman Comp coming, and their rules allowing the use of Elbow Sleeves, I figured I'd pick some up.

I've had a pair of the Hercules Sleeves that my training partner gave me.  Except she bought them as Knee Sleeves, and they fit me as Elbow sleeves...

They work good, and are nice, but considering for the comp, I need to lock out a 140lb Dumbbell overhead, any advantage I can get, I'd take.  So, last week, I jumped in and ordered a set of Cool Hand Luke heavy sleeves.  They are triple-ply and solid sleeves.  I ordered Mediums and they fit my arms quite well.  I think that I could have possibly gone down to a Small and had to roll them on, but in a year, those wouldn't fit.

Tonight is Bench Night, so it'll be Bench, Z-Presses, and Push Press, then light shoulder rep work.

review will get posted tomorrow.

That's sweet they allow them, any restrictions?  sounds like they are pretty lenient if they allow triple ply.....however it is strongman so I'm sure their rules are quite different compared to a PL meet.

The rules are a bit more relaxed.

There is no drug testing.  They allow all sorts of Knee/Elbow Sleeves, and wraps.  You usually don't see Squatting at a Strongman though.  Some comps allow Suits and Briefs, others are Raw.

It really remains open to the Director as to what they want.  I'm honestly still learning about all the different variations and possible events.

First training session with them, and Damn are they tight! Was starting to think that I may have gone a size too small with them.  When I say tight, I mean that my fingers would start to tingle if I had them on more than 5 minutes.  I would roll them up, hit a heavy set, roll them back down.  They constrict the movement, and certainly help with lockouts.  I only used them on the Push press & OHP.  I didn't have a liftoff partner on Bench, so went without.

I'm hoping that they give a little bit as they age, and hopefully I lean out a bit.

I am happy that I made the purchase, but these will only get used for a handful of Heavy sets.  If I were to get another pair, I'd probably go with Thor Sleeves from Strengthshopusa.  I currently have the Hercules single Ply that work real good and I can leave them on for most of the exercise.
